HEAL Initiative Roundtable: A Foundation for HEALing: Conversations to Strengthen Partnerships
Fri, 5/6/2022 - 11:00am - 1:00pm
Overview
On May 6th, 2022, the NIH HEAL Initiative and HEAL Data Stewardship Group hosted A Foundation for HEALing: Conversations to Strengthen Partnerships. Through this event, HEAL sought input from communities and individuals working with or affected by pain, opioid use, addiction, and related conditions that are part of HEAL research. This event was a first step in building sustained, bi-directional partnerships to provide input to the HEAL research pipeline, from understanding research needs for different communities, to helping integrate patients and people with lived experience into study planning, to providing input on results dissemination.
The event kicked off with a plenary session, which included opening remarks from Dr. Rebecca Baker, HEAL Initiative Director, followed by a keynote from Dr. Karriem Watson, Chief Engagement Officer at NIH All of Us. For the second session, participants were broken into groups to discuss barriers to getting information and data to their communities, and what data and resources they’d like to see.
Key Takeaways From the Event:
- Communities and individuals in the communities need to be supported financially for the and efforts they contribute to scientific research.
- Approaches to engagement have vary based on community needs; HEAL needs to fit into the communities, not the other way around.
- Data cannot be a one size fits all – different people with different experiences will view, interpret, and use data differently.
