Metadata 102: Empowering Search on the HEAL Platform
Thu, 3/17/2022 - 1:00pm - 2:00pm
The NIH HEAL Initiative® aims to leverage its vast research portfolio, accompanying data, and research community to accelerate scientific discovery and develop solutions to address the national opioid and pain management public health crises. The over 900 hundred studies involved in the initiative are producing data at rapid rates, and properly preparing this data for sharing and re-use is critical in order for researchers to translate this collective knowledge into real solutions for real people.
Last year’s Metadata 101 webinar highlighted how standardized metadata can maximize the value of HEAL Data. This 102 webinar will build upon the foundational concepts previously discussed and delve into the significance of metadata in the broader picture of standardizing and increasing data and knowledge sharing.
During the webinar, Andrea Tentner, senior data scientist at NORC at the University of Chicago and member of the team building the HEAL Platform, will lead a presentation introducing a HEAL study-level core metadata model and a study registration process that will allow HEAL researchers and the broader community to maximize the benefits of the HEAL Platform. The presentation will be followed by a moderated panel discussion led by Kira Bradford of the HEAL Data Stewardship Group and featuring Andrea Tentner, Alex Waldrop of the HEAL Data Stewardship Group, and Anthony Juehne, an NIH Program Officer for the HEAL Initiative.
Speakers
Andrea Tentner, Ph.D., M.P.H., is a senior data scientist at NORC at the University of Chicago. Dr. Tentner is a biological engineer and systems biologist by training with a strong bent towards public health, intent on bringing traditionally siloed fields and data together to study, model, and test the health and health equity impacts of broad-ranging interventions on the complex interplay of social, environmental, and biological determinants of human health. Dr. Tentner has been thrilled to be part of the core team working to formulate a HEAL metadata model that describes data in a way that transcends fields, drawing a broader set of data consumers to find and use the data.

Metadata 101: Adding Value to HEAL Data (Virtual Webinar)
This third webinar in our Fresh FAIR series introduced the topic of metadata, a core focus for ensuring data is accessible for computation and further research. Metadata - or put simply “data about data” - increases the value of HEAL data for the research community by ensuring that data is findable and accessible for reuse.
About the HEAL Data Ecosystem
The goal of the HEAL Data Ecosystem is to accelerate sharing HEAL-generated data and results among the broad community of researchers, healthcare providers, community leaders, policy makers, and other HEAL stakeholders who can benefit from learning the results of initiative research.
Following the HEAL Blueprint for Managing and Sharing Data
As data sharing and access becomes increasingly important to accelerating science, the NIH HEAL Initiative and the Data Stewardship Group are providing new resources and guidance for these plans.
