Overview

The NIH and the NIH HEAL Initiative is excited to invite you to the inaugural PURPOSE Meeting, which will be an in-person event at the National Harbor in Maryland from May 11-13, 2023.

The goal of this meeting is to provide learning experiences for early-stage pain researchers funded by the NIH and connect them with NIH-funded mentors outside of their home institutions.

1st Annual PURPOSE Meeting Program

Presentations will center on the biological, psychological, and social mechanisms of pain to encourage the exchange of information across the spectrum of pain research.  There will also be talks focused on research skills and communication training. Early-career investigators will also be provided an opportunity to receive proctored feedback from NIH funded mentors and NIH program staff regarding poster presentations and an aims page.

On-site career development workshops will provide a space for trainees and mentors to grow their professional skills.

Finally, perspectives from people with lived experience of pain will be highlighted to ground these learning experiences in the reason that they matter most – improving care and quality of life from people affected by pain.

What is the PURPOSE Network?

A strong and diverse workforce of multidisciplinary pain experts is crucial for the discovery of effective and equitable pain care solutions. For this reason, efforts that support the pain research workforce are a high priority for the NIH Helping End Addiction Long-term® Initiative, or NIH HEAL Initiative®. The PURPOSE Network, an online networking and collaboration platform with unique features to address a variety of career development needs, aims to bring together and support NIH-funded pain researchers across diverse backgrounds and career stages. We hope to create a supportive community where trainees and researchers across the continuum of pain care can collaborate with and learn from each other.

The PURPOSE Network aims to achieve this goal by:

  • Offering ongoing webinars and training opportunities for all career stages
  • Connecting trainees with mentors to foster future generations of pain researchers
  • Connecting peers with similar interests to spark research collaborations
  • Emailing weekly network digests with relevant updates, such as upcoming conferences and funding opportunities

Who is encouraged to join the PURPOSE network?

  • All NIH-funded pain researchers
  • Researchers at any career stage who are interested in applying for a NIH grant
  • NIH staff members (to facilitate communication between NIH-funded researchers and NIH program staff)

Researchers can join and participate in the network by visiting the PURPOSE Network website.
